The 'Ivory Curls' is a nursery produced cultivar. It originated in Australia, South East Queensland at the nursery of well know plantsman Stan Walkley. It is an improved variegated form of Agave gypsophila reaching a height and spread of 1m. Unlike the more common agaves the striking thing about this plant is the wavy spined leaves. It is a smaller Agave and is typically solitary in habitat.

Origin of Name

The species name, gypsophila, is derived from Greek words 'gypsos' meaning gypsum, and 'philos' meaning loving, referring to the plant's natural preference for gypsum-rich soils in its native habitat. The cultivar name 'Ivory Curls' beautifully describes the unique appearance of its leaves, which are wavy and edged with a creamy, ivory color, giving them a curled look that is both elegant and striking.

Technical Description of Plant

It is an improved variegated form of Agave gypsophila reaching a height and spread of 1m. Unlike the more common agaves the striking thing about this plant is the wavy spined leaves. It is a smaller Agave and is typically solitary in habitat.Agave gypsophila 'Ivory Curls' is known for its stunning, architectural form and ornamental appeal. This succulent forms a large, sprawling rosette of narrow, blue-green leaves that are notably wavy and recurved. The leaf margins are adorned with a contrasting ivory to pale yellow border, and the leaves are lined with small, sharp teeth. The 'Ivory Curls' variety stands out for its softer, more pliable leaves compared to the stiffer leaves of the typical Agave gypsophila. Mature plants can spread several feet wide, making a dramatic statement in any landscape or garden setting. This agave blooms once at maturity, sending up a tall flower spike with numerous yellow to pale green flowers, after which the main plant typically dies.

Cultivation of 'Ivory Curls' and other agave cultivars in gardens and nurseries helps preserve these remarkable plants by reducing demand for wild specimens.

Care Instructions

Agave gypsophila 'Ivory Curls' prefers full sun to partial shade, with brighter light intensifying the colors of the leaves. It requires well-draining soil and should be watered sparingly; allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, a common issue with agaves. This plant is somewhat cold-sensitive and should be protected from frost. In colder climates, it can be grown in containers and moved indoors during winter. Minimal fertilization is needed; a light application of a succulent fertilizer in the spring can support healthy growth.
