6 to 8 inch rooted plants / Size as shown

Origin of Name

The genus name "Alluaudia" is named after François Alluaud, a French explorer and industrialist who collected plants in Madagascar. The species name "procera" means "tall" or "elongated" in Latin, aptly describing the plant's growth habit.

Technical Description of Plant

Alluaudia procera is characterized by its upright, columnar growth habit, often reaching impressive heights in its native habitat (up to 15 meters or more). The plant's stem is covered in small, spiny leaves that grow in clusters along the stem's length, giving it a unique texture. These leaves are deciduous, dropping off during the dry season to conserve water. Another notable feature is the spines, which are prominent and provide the plant with protection. Alluaudia procera produces small, inconspicuous flowers, and its grayish-green stem is capable of photosynthesis.

Origin of Plant

Native to Madagascar, Alluaudia procera is adapted to the arid environments of the island’s spiny forests. This plant has evolved to thrive in dry conditions with infrequent rainfall, making it well-suited to environments that mimic these conditions.

Conservation Status

Alluaudia procera is not listed as an endangered species, but like many plants native to Madagascar, it faces threats from habitat loss and environmental changes. Madagascar's unique flora and fauna are often at risk due to deforestation and land conversion for agriculture. Conservation efforts for plants like Alluaudia procera focus on habitat preservation and sustainable cultivation.

Care Instructions

Alluaudia procera prefers a sunny location and well-draining soil. It's a drought-tolerant plant and should be watered sparingly; allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. It can tolerate high temperatures but should be protected from frost. In colder climates, Alluaudia procera is best grown in a container that can be moved indoors during winter. Fertilize lightly during the growing season to support growth.
