Origin of Name

The genus "Cleistocactus" derives from the Greek word 'kleistos', meaning closed, referring to the tubular, often closed flowers typical of this genus. The species name "winterii" derives from Hildegarda Winter (1893-1975), beloved sister of the famous and intrepid cactus collector Friedrich Ritter (1898-1989).. The term 'Rufus Clone' indicates a specific cultivar or clone known for its reddish ('rufus' in Latin) characteristics, distinguishing it from the standard green or blue-green forms of Cleistocactus winterii.

Technical Description of Plant

Cleistocactus winterii 'Rufus Clone' is characterized by its slender, columnar stems that can grow up to 2-3 meters in height, though they are often shorter in cultivation. The stems are covered in dense, white areoles from which emerge long, reddish-brown spines, giving the plant its distinctive 'rufus' appearance. This clone produces striking tubular flowers in a vibrant red to coral hue, which emerge horizontally from the stems in late spring to early summer, attracting hummingbirds and other pollinators.

Origin of Plant

Cleistocactus winterii is native to Bolivia, where it grows in mountainous regions and dry valleys. The 'Rufus Clone' is a cultivated variety selected for its unique reddish spination and flowers, developed through selective breeding and propagation to enhance these desirable traits.

Conservation Status

As a species, Cleistocactus winterii is not currently listed as endangered. However, like many cacti, it faces threats from habitat destruction and illegal collection in its native habitat. The 'Rufus Clone', being primarily cultivated, does not directly contribute to the conservation concerns of wild populations but represents the biodiversity within the species.

Care Instructions

Cleistocactus winterii 'Rufus Clone' thrives in well-draining soil with ample sunlight. It prefers a sunny to a partly sunny location, which helps in maintaining its unique coloration and supporting flowering. Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings, and reduce watering in the winter months. This clone is somewhat frost-resistant but should be protected from severe cold, especially in regions where temperatures drop below freezing. Fertilize sparingly with a cactus-specific fertilizer during the growing season to promote growth and flowering.
