Product Details

A Schick Hybrid. ISI 97-30; HBG 80616, Schick 1255-30. This cultivar is the result of more than 20 years of devoted work by cacti enthusiast and hybridiser Bob Schick. Bob Schick was an American plant enthusiast and cactus hybridizer born in 1930 in Oakland, California. Schick was known for his remarkable contribution to the horticulture community, particularly in the cultivation of cacti and succulents. He is considered one of the most influential cactus breeders, especially in the creation of new Echinopsis hybrids.

Flower to 4¼ inches (11 cm) across. Petals relatively few, lanceolate to obovate, mainly deep magenta with thin, dark bronzy-orange or deep red basal stripe and midrib. Outer petals and sepals similar in color to inner petals. Throat-circle a bright white ring. Filaments magenta. Stigma white.

Technical Description of Plant

Echinopsis 'Sorceress' is noted for its globular, green to blue-green stem that can grow several inches in diameter. The plant may produce multiple offsets, forming a clump over time. It features relatively few but prominent spines, which can be up to an inch long. The most striking feature of 'Sorceress' is its large, vibrant flowers that can be several inches in diameter. These blooms, typically appearing in spring or summer, are often pink or magenta, with a multitude of petals creating a stunning display.

Origin of Plant

This hybrid is a cultivated variety, developed specifically for its floral characteristics. It is a cross between selected Echinopsis species or hybrids, bred to enhance features such as flower size, color, and bloom duration. As a result, 'Sorceress' does not have a specific place of origin in the wild but is a product of careful selection and breeding in cultivation.

Conservation Status

As a cultivated hybrid, Echinopsis 'Sorceress' does not have a conservation status. It is not found in the wild and is specifically grown for ornamental purposes. The cultivation of such hybrids plays a vital role in reducing the demand for wild-collected specimens.

Care Instructions

Echinopsis 'Sorceress' thrives in well-draining soil, ideally a cactus mix. It prefers full sun to partial shade, with more shade required in hotter climates to prevent sunburn. Water the plant regularly in the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in winter to a minimum. The plant is not frost-hardy, so it should be protected or brought indoors in regions with cold winters. Fertilize with a diluted low-nitrogen fertilizer during the growing season to encourage blooms.
