Product Details

Origin of Name Haworthia cooperi was named by J.G. Baker in Refugium Botanicum in 1871. Haworthia cooperi is named after Thomas Cooper (1815–1913), an English botanist and explorer who came to South Africa in 1859.

Technical Description of Plant Haworthia cooperi var. truncata is a small, rosette-forming succulent known for its strikingly transparent and rounded leaves. These leaves are unique in that they appear as if they have been cut across the top, giving them a truncated, almost window-like appearance. The transparency of the leaf tips allows sunlight to pass through for photosynthesis, creating a beautiful, glass-like effect. The leaves are usually a soft, lush green and can sometimes have a bluish tint. The plant remains compact, typically growing to only a few inches in height and width. It blooms with delicate, white flowers on thin, elongated stalks, although the foliage is the primary point of interest for most collectors.

Geographic Origin and Habitat Haworthia cooperi, including the var. truncata, is native to South Africa. It is commonly found in the Eastern Cape Province, where it grows in well-drained, sandy soils in rocky areas. This plant thrives in arid environments and often grows in the shade of other vegetation, which shields it from the intense African sun.

Conservation Status Haworthia cooperi var. truncata, like many succulent varieties, is not individually listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The primary threats to its conservation are habitat loss and the illegal collection of plants from the wild. Sustainable cultivation and responsible trading practices are crucial to the preservation of this variety and other Haworthia species.

Care Instructions Caring for Haworthia cooperi var. truncata requires attention to several key aspects:

  1. Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can be too harsh, especially in hot climates, and may damage the leaves.
  2. Watering: Follow the 'soak and dry' method, allowing the soil to completely dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
  3. Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix, ideally one formulated for succulents and cacti.
  4. Temperature: Best kept in temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C) and should be protected from frost.
  5. Feeding: Fertilize sparingly with a diluted, balanced fertilizer during the growing season.
  6. Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its container, to ensure fresh soil and good root health.

Haworthia cooperi var. truncata is a charming and relatively low-maintenance plant, ideal for succulent enthusiasts and perfect for adding a touch of translucent beauty to any indoor plant collection or as a feature in a terrarium. Its unique leaf structure and compact growth habit make it a fascinating and attractive specimen.
