A new species of Mammillaria, named Mammillaria breviplumosa, is described from Mexico (Durango, Municipality of Mapimí). It is morphologically very similar to M. sanchez-mejoradae.

Etymology/Origin of Name

Mammillaria breviplumosa derives its name from the Latin words "brevis" meaning short, and "plumosa" meaning feathery, referring to its short feathery spines.

Mammillaria breviplumosa is native to Mexico, specifically found in the state of Durango, in the Municipality of Mapimí.

Technical Description

Mammillaria breviplumosa is a spherical cactus species with clustering stems completely covered in white downy spines. It grows up to 12 cm (5 in) tall and 40 cm (16 in) broad, with individual stems around 7 cm (3 in) in diameter. The flowers are white or greenish-yellow, blooming in late summer.

Conservation Status

The conservation status of Mammillaria breviplumosa is not available but these are nursery produced plants which are grafted for propagation.

As a cultivated species, Mammillaria breviplumosa requires greenhouse conditions with heating in temperate regions.
