Technical Description of Plant

Agave pumila cv. 'NANA' showcases a rosette of thick, fleshy leaves that are blue-green in color, with each leaf edged in a contrasting, spiny margin. Despite its small size, 'NANA' does not skimp on visual impact; the leaves may exhibit a slight curvature, giving the plant a dynamic and sculptural appearance. Typically, this cultivar grows to a maximum of 6 inches in height and width, making it an ideal choice for limited spaces. Like other agaves, 'NANA' is a slow grower, which, over time, may produce a stalk of attractive yellow flowers, although flowering is rare in cultivation.

Origin of Plant

Agave pumila, the species from which '

NANA' is derived, is native to Central Mexico, thriving in rocky and arid environments. This species has adapted over millennia to survive with minimal water, storing moisture in its leaves to endure periods of drought. The 'NANA' cultivar has been selectively bred to retain the appealing characteristics of Agave pumila in a more compact form, suitable for cultivation in smaller gardens or as a houseplant.

Conservation Status

As a cultivated variety, Agave pumila cv. 'NANA' does not have a specific conservation status. However, the cultivation and propagation of agave cultivars play a crucial role in reducing the demand for wild specimens, thereby indirectly contributing to the conservation of natural agave populations and their habitats.

Care Instructions

Agave pumila cv. 'NANA' requires bright, direct sunlight to thrive and well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to completely dry out between waterings, and reduce watering in the winter to a minimum. This plant is well-suited to warm, dry climates but should be protected from frost, which can damage its leaves. Fertilization is not necessary, but a light application of a succulent fertilizer can be used during the growing season to support its health. Due to its compact size, 'NANA' is perfect for container gardening, rock gardens, or as part of a succulent display, offering a unique texture and form.
