Etymology/ History
Mammillaria lenta gets its species name 'lenta' from the Latin word meaning 'slow', referring to its very slow growth rate. It was first described scientifically by Katharine Brandegee in 1904 based on specimens found near Viesca, Coahuila, Mexico.
Origin or Occurrence
This small, clustering cactus is native to the Mexican state of Coahuila, where it grows in rock cracks at elevations between 900-1,400 meters.
Description
Stems
Spherical to compressed spherical stems, 3 cm tall and up to 10 cm wide, bright green to yellow-green in color. The conical tubercles are almost completely obscured by dense clusters of soft, white radial spines up to 0.7 cm long. No central spines.
Flowers
Large, pure white flowers with a purplish-pink stripe on each petal, 2 cm long and 2.5 cm wide, with bright olive-green stigmas. Blooms in spring, often forming rings around the stem tops.
Conservation Status
Mammillaria lenta is listed on CITES Appendix 2 as a species that may become threatened with extinction if trade is not regulated. Our plants are nursery grown plants.
Care Instructions
Watering
Allow to experience a cooling, drier period in winter to encourage better flowering. Water when tubercles have shrunken, allowing soil to dry between waterings to prevent rot.
Soil
Use a very porous, mineral-based potting mix with excellent drainage.
Light
Provide full sun to partial afternoon shade outdoors. Bright light and some direct sun is needed indoors.
Temperature
Hardy to USDA zones 9a-11b, tolerating temperatures from -6.7°C to 10°C. Do not expose to prolonged cold or moisture.
Fertilizer
Feed with a high potassium fertilizer during the growing season.
Repotting
Repot as needed during the warm months, ensuring soil is completely dry first. Remove any rotten roots.
