1. Origin & History of Name The species name honors James William Toumey (1865–1932), a notable American botanist and professor of forestry at Yale who extensively studied Southwestern flora. The varietal epithet bella is derived from the Latin word for "beautiful" or "lovely," a distinction given by botanist William Trelease in 1920 to differentiate this compact, aesthetically superior form from the standard species.
2. Morphology This subspecies is a "miniature" Agave, forming dense, symmetrical rosettes. It is characterized by its dark green epidermis adorned with striking white filaments (thread-like hairs) that peel from the leaf margins. Unlike larger species, its leaves are narrow and rigid, featuring distinct white bud prints—permanent impressions left on the leaves by the pressure of the rosette as it develops.
