Radiant Architectural Rarity: Agave victoriae-reginae cv. 'Kazo Bana' / Golden Princess
A masterpiece of living geometry, this highly sought-after Japanese cultivar is a crown jewel for serious succulent collectors.
- Origin & History of Name: Named in honor of Queen Victoria of England, the species victoriae-reginae carries a royal lineage in botany. The cultivar name 'Kazo Bana' translates from Japanese as "Floral Direction" or "Flower of Kazo," while 'Golden Princess' reflects its status as a smaller, more refined variegated version of the original "Queen" Agave.
- Morphology: This cultivar is distinguished by its compact, globose rosette and thick, rigid leaves. Its unique aesthetic comes from marginal variegation, where the epidermis features broad, creamy-yellow bands contrasting against a deep green center. Unlike many Agaves, it lacks marginal teeth but terminates in a singular, sharp terminal spine. Fine white striae (lines) often decorate the leaf surfaces, adding to its etched, sculptural appearance.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a dedicated cultivar, specifically selected and stabilized through Japanese horticulture. While the parent species is native to the Chihuahuan Desert in Mexico, 'Kazo Bana' does not exist in the wild. Our specimens are sourced from nurseries practicing sustainable vegetative propagation to protect wild populations of the endangered parent species.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (60% inorganic). In India, a blend of crushed brick, pumice, or expanded clay with a small amount of coco-peat works best to prevent root rot during monsoon.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect sunlight. In the Indian subcontinent, provide 40-50% shade during peak summer afternoons to prevent "bleaching" of the yellow variegation.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow a "soak and dry" method. Reduce watering significantly during the winter dormancy and the high-humidity monsoon season to avoid fungal pathogens.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The parent species is famously "monocarpic," meaning it blooms only once after 20 to 30 years of growth and then dies. Because 'Kazo Bana' grows much slower than the standard green form, a single specimen can remain a centerpiece of a collection for decades before reaching its dramatic, final flowering stage.
