Product Details
Geometric Precision: Agave x leopoldii hort. ex G.Nicholson
A compact living sculpture defined by symmetrical filiferous leaves, perfect for the high-end minimalist collection.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Agave stems from the Greek agauos (admirable). This hybrid is named in honor of King Leopold II of Belgium, a noted plant enthusiast of the 19th century.
The designation "hort. ex G.Nicholson" indicates it was a horticultural selection formally described by George Nicholson, the curator of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, around 1900. - Morphology: This plant is a compact, slow-growing hybrid featuring a dense rosette of narrow, rigid leaves.
The epidermis is a deep emerald green, characterized by distinct white bud imprints—silvery markings left by the pressure of the leaves before they unfurl. It is celebrated for its filiferous margins, where white, curly filaments (threads) peel away from the leaf edges, creating a striking mechanical contrast against the sharp terminal spines. - Habitat & Origin: Agave x leopoldii is an anthropogenic cultivar, not found in the wild.
It is a stabilized hybrid between Agave filifera and Agave schidigera. Modern specimens are primarily produced via tissue culture or offsets (pups), ensuring a sustainable supply chain that does not impact wild Agave populations in their native Mexico. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Requires a coarse, mineral-heavy substrate. A mix of 60% grit (lava rock, cinder, or coarse sand) and 40% organic compost ensures the rapid drainage necessary for the Indian monsoon.
- Light: Thrives in bright, filtered light to full sun.
In the intense heat of Central and South India, 30% shade cloth during summer afternoons prevents leaf scorch. - Water/Dormancy: Highly drought-tolerant.
Water deeply only when the medium is 100% dry. During the cooler months in North India, the plant enters a semi-dormant state; reduce watering frequency to once a month to maintain root health.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: This hybrid is often cited as one of the most successful early "designer" succulents. Despite its small stature, it is monocarpic, meaning the individual rosette will bloom only once at the end of its life (often after 10–20 years), producing a towering flower spike before the parent plant expires, typically leaving behind numerous offsets to continue the colony.
