Air Plant Tillandsia 'Showtime' T. bulbosa X T. Streptophylla
Product Details
Botanical Drama: Tillandsia 'Showtime' (T. bulbosa x T. streptophylla)
A premier hybrid merging the pseudobulbous intrigue of bulbosa with the elegant, curly xeric foliage of streptophylla.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus Tillandsia was named by Carl Linnaeus in 1753 to honor the Swedish botanist Elias Tillandz.
The cultivar name 'Showtime' was established by legendary breeder Mark Dimmitt, who selected this specific cross for its superior vigor and spectacular floral display. The name reflects the plant’s dramatic transition during its bloom cycle, characterized by intense color shifts and large, multi-branched inflorescences. - Morphology: This hybrid is an epiphyte featuring a prominent pseudobulb (a hollow, swollen base) inherited from T. bulbosa. Its leaves are covered in trichomes—specialized silver scales that absorb moisture and nutrients from the air.
The foliage exhibits a "xeric" (dry-growing) quality, where the leaf blades tend to curl or spiral tightly when dehydrated, a morphological trait passed down from the T. streptophylla parent. - Habitat & Origin: Tillandsia 'Showtime' is a man-made cultivar, not found in the wild. It is a cross between two species native to Central and South America. Because these are produced via offsets (pups) or nursery-controlled pollination, they are highly sustainable, ensuring that wild populations of the parent species remain undisturbed by trade.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Strictly soilless. Mount on cork bark, driftwood, or place in a wire basket. Ensure the base is never trapped in moisture, as the pseudobulb is highly susceptible to rot.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect filtered light. In India, an east-facing balcony or a spot near a window with sheer curtains is ideal; avoid harsh mid-day sun which can scorch the leaf tips in tropical heat.
- Water/Dormancy: Provide a thorough misting 3-4 times a week, or a 20-minute soak once a week. In the Indian monsoon, reduce watering due to high ambient humidity. After watering, the plant must be shaken upside down to ensure no water remains trapped inside the bulbous base.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The T. bulbosa parent of this hybrid is naturally myrmecophilic, meaning it has a symbiotic relationship with ants. In the wild, the hollow base provides a protected nesting site for ant colonies, while the plant absorbs nutrients from the ants' waste products. While 'Showtime' is grown without ants in domestic settings, its anatomy still retains these specialized "ant chambers."
