Product Details
Radiant Ribs: Astrophytum myriostigma cv. Fukuryu Variegated
A masterclass in geometric mutation, this rare Japanese cultivar pairs classic 'Bishop’s Cap' symmetry with vivid yellow variegation and unique extra-rib development.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Astrophytum stems from the Greek astron (star) and phyton (plant), referencing its celestial shape.
The specific epithet myriostigma means "myriad dots," describing the white felt-like scales on the skin. "Fukuryu" is a Japanese term meaning "hidden ribs" or "creeping dragon," referring to the extra protuberances or secondary ribs that develop between the primary ones. - Morphology: This plant is a spineless succulent characterized by a globose to columnar epidermis. It is distinguished by two primary mutations: Variegation, which creates sectors of chlorophyll-free yellow tissue, and the Fukuryu trait, where the plant develops additional "costae" (ribs) or warty tubercles along its sides. Unlike the standard five-ribbed form, this cultivar presents a complex, multi-layered geometric texture.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a strictly horticultural cultivar with origins in Japanese breeding programs.
While the parent species A. myriostigma is native to the Chihuahuan Desert in Mexico, the Fukuryu Variegated form does not exist in the wild. It is a sustainable choice for collectors as it is produced through controlled nursery propagation rather than wild poaching. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (70% grit/pumice/perlite and 30% organic matter). In the humid Indian climate, ensure the pot is porous (clay or terracotta) to prevent root rot.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect sunlight. In India, protect from the harsh afternoon "Loo" winds and scorching direct sun (April–June) to prevent permanent scarring of the variegated tissue.
- Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly only when the medium is completely bone-dry. During the monsoon, keep the plant under a rain shelter to avoid over-saturation. Reduce watering significantly in winter (November–January) to respect its dormant phase.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The Astrophytum genus was first described by Charles Lemaire in 1839.
For decades, the myriostigma species was thought to be a single form until Japanese collectors in the 20th century began selecting for "monstrose" traits, transforming the simple "Bishop's Cap" into highly prized, sculptural works of art like the Fukuryu.
