Product Details
Geometric Masterpiece: Astrophytum myriostigma cv. KIKKO X ONZUKA
A premier architectural hybrid fusing the "tortoise shell" structure of Kikko with the intricate white "snowdrift" flocking of the Onzuka lineage.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Astrophytum stems from the Greek astron (star) and phyton (plant). This specific cultivar represents a pinnacle of Japanese selection; "Kikko" translates to "tortoise shell," referencing the notched ribs, while "Onzuka" is named after the renowned Japanese breeder Tsutomu Onzuka, who stabilized the unique, heavy-flecked epidermis patterns in the late 20th century.
- Morphology: This cultivar is distinguished by its prominent costae (ribs) which feature deep horizontal incisions or "notches," creating a sculptural, tuberculate appearance. The epidermis is densely covered in large, white woolly scales (trichomes) that form erratic, beautiful patterns. Unlike the standard five-ribbed species, this hybrid focuses on symmetry and the tactile depth of its "shell-like" surface.
- Habitat & Origin: This is an anthropogenic cultivar, not found in the wild. While the base species A. myriostigma originates from the Chihuahuan Desert in Mexico, this specific cross is the result of intensive selective breeding in Japan. It is a sustainable choice for collectors, as these plants are exclusively nursery-produced via seed or grafting, protecting wild populations from poaching.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (pudding stone, lava rock, perlite, and coarse sand) with less than 10% organic matter to prevent root rot.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect sunlight. In the intense Indian summer, provide 30-50% shade cloth protection to avoid scorching the sensitive epidermis.
- Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly only when the medium is bone-dry. During the monsoon, withhold water entirely if humidity is high. Maintain strict winter dormancy from November to February to mimic its natural growth cycle.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Astrophytum myriostigma was first described by Lemaire in 1839. Interestingly, the "Onzuka" mutation was a serendipitous discovery in a batch of thousands of seedlings; it took decades of "back-breeding" (crossing a plant with its parent) to stabilize the heavy white flocking that collectors prize today.
