Origin of Name

The genus "Browningia" is named in honor of Webster E. Browning (1869–1942), a director of the Santiago National Observatory in Chile, reflecting the geographical focus and botanical interest in the region. The species name "candelaris" is derived from the Latin word for candle, "candelaris", alluding to the cactus's tall, candle-like appearance, reminiscent of a candelabra, especially when its arms branch out in older specimens.

Technical Description of Plant

Browningia candelaris is characterized by its tall, slender, columnar growth, which can reach impressive heights, making it a standout feature in any collection or landscape where it can be accommodated. The cactus initially grows as a single column, but as it matures, it may develop branches near the top, forming a candelabra-like structure. Its skin is blue-green, providing a stunning contrast to the arid environments it originates from. Spines are arranged along ribs that run vertically down the plant's body, offering protection and a unique texture. Rarely, under the right conditions, it produces nocturnal white flowers that open at night and close by morning, followed by small, round fruits.

Origin of Plant

Browningia candelaris is native to the Andean regions of Chile and Peru, where it is found in arid and semi-arid environments, often on rocky slopes and in desert landscapes. Its adaptation to these harsh conditions is a testament to the remarkable resilience of cacti.

Conservation Status

Currently, Browningia candelaris faces threats from habitat destruction, climate change, and overcollection. While specific conservation measures are necessary to protect this species in its natural habitat, it is not listed as endangered. However, its status could change without proper conservation efforts, highlighting the importance of sustainable practices in the collection and cultivation of rare cacti.

Care Instructions

In cultivation, Browningia candelaris requires conditions that mimic its natural habitat as closely as possible. It prefers well-draining soil mixes designed for cacti and succulents, to prevent root rot. Full sun exposure is ideal, as it promotes healthy growth, spine development, and potentially flowering. Water sparingly, only when the soil has completely dried out, and reduce watering in the cooler months to prevent waterlogging. While it can tolerate some cold, protection from frost is necessary, especially in climates that experience temperatures below freezing.
