Origin of Name

The genus "Browningia" is named in honor of Webster E. Browning (1869–1942), a director of the Santiago National Observatory in Chile, reflecting the geographical focus and botanical interest in the region. The species name "candelaris" is derived from the Latin word for candle, "candelaris", alluding to the cactus's tall, candle-like appearance, reminiscent of a candelabra, especially when its arms branch out in older specimens.
