Origin & History of Name: The genus name Caralluma is derived from the Arabic qahr-al-luhum, meaning "wound in the flesh" or "ulcer," likely referencing the pungent floral scent or the appearance of the flowers. The specific epithet burchardii honors Oscar Burchard (1863–1949), a German botanist and expert on the flora of the Canary Islands who first documented the species in the early 20th century.
2. Morphology: This succulent is characterized by erect, four-angled stems with a smooth, glaucous epidermis. The costae (ribs) are prominently notched with small, vestigial leaf-scale tubercles. Its most striking feature is the inflorescence: clusters of small, five-lobed flowers that possess a corolla covered in fine, dark purple-to-brown hairs, giving the petals a distinct velvety texture designed to attract specific pollinators.
3. Habitat & Origin: Caralluma burchardii is a wild species endemic to the eastern Canary Islands (Fuerteventura and Lanzarote) and parts of Morocco. It grows in volcanic, rocky crevices where drainage is instantaneous.
