Sculptural Blue Wonder: Cereus forbesii ‘Ming Thing’
A rare, monstrous mutation prized for its otherworldly blue-grey folds and architectural presence.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus Cereus comes from the Latin word for "torch" or "wax candle," referring to the upright growth of the parent species.
The cultivar name "Ming Thing" is a whimsical reference to its resemblance to ancient Chinese Ming dynasty scholar’s stones or "Gongshi," which are naturally occurring, weathered rocks valued for their complex, distorted shapes. - Morphology: This is a "monstrose" form of Cereus forbesii, meaning it suffers from a genetic mutation where the growth points (apical meristems) are disordered.
Instead of a straight column, it develops a lumpy, "cerebriform" (brain-like) epidermis. It lacks the typical vertical costae (ribs) of its parent, instead featuring small, woolly areoles and short, dark spines that contrast against its glaucous blue skin. - Habitat & Origin: This plant is a cultivar and does not exist in the wild. It was selectively bred from Cereus forbesii, which is native to South America (Argentina and Bolivia). Because it is propagated via cuttings in nursery settings, it is a highly sustainable choice for collectors as it does not involve the poaching of wild specimens.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (60% grit/pumice/perlite and 40% organic matter) to ensure rapid drainage, especially during the Indian monsoon.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. In the Indian subcontinent, protect from harsh afternoon sun (12 PM – 4 PM) to prevent "sunscald" on the epidermis; morning sun is ideal.
- Water & Dormancy: Water deeply only when the medium is bone-dry. During the humid monsoon and the cooler winter months (November–January), reduce watering significantly as the plant enters a semi-dormant state.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: While most monstrous cacti are notoriously slow-growing and fragile, the 'Ming Thing' is scientifically noted for its relative vigor and hardiness. Interestingly, while its parent species produces large, nocturnal white flowers, this monstrous cultivar rarely blooms, instead putting all its biological energy into its bizarre, sculptural stem growth.
