Coryphantha Maiz-Tablasensis
Product Details
Rare Treasure: Coryphantha maiz-tablasensis
A sought-after architectural gem prized by collectors for its unique flattened profile and formidable spination.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Coryphantha derives from the Greek koryphe (summit) and anthos (flower), referring to the blooms that emerge from the plant's apex.
The specific epithet maiz-tablasensis is a locational identifier, pinpointing its discovery between the towns of Ciudad del Maíz and Las Tablas in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. - Morphology: This cactus features a globose to distinctly depressed-globose epidermis, allowing it to sit low to the ground. Unlike many cacti with continuous costae (ribs), it is composed of prominent, rounded tubercles. The areoles produce thick, slightly curved radial spines, and as the plant matures, it develops a woolly crown from which large, silky yellow flowers emerge.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a wild species endemic to a specific limestone-rich region of San Luis Potosí, Mexico.
Because it occupies a limited geographic range, it is considered vulnerable in the wild; therefore, our specimens are exclusively nursery-grown from seed to ensure environmental sustainability and conservation of wild populations. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (70% grit/pumice/perlite and 30% organic matter). In the humid Indian climate, high porosity is vital to prevent root rot.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect sunlight.
In Indian summers, provide 30-50% shade cloth protection during peak afternoon hours (12 PM – 4 PM) to prevent epidermal scorching. - Water/Dormancy: Water deeply only when the medium is completely dry.
During the monsoon, withhold water if humidity is excessively high. Maintain a strict dry dormancy from November to February to mimic its natural cool-dry cycle.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Coryphantha was originally classified as a subgenus of Mammillaria.
It wasn't until 1868 that botanist George Engelmann recognized them as a distinct genus based on the "groove" that runs along the top of the tubercles—a feature Mammillaria lacks—which directs the flower buds toward the plant's center.
