Desert Jewel: Echinocereus fendleri var. fendleri (Petrified Forest, AZ)
A rare, high-altitude survivor from the Painted Desert, prized for its shimmering magenta blooms and rugged geometric form.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Echinocereus is derived from the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and the Latin cereus (candle), describing its spiny, columnar habit.
The species name fendleri honors August Fendler, a prolific Prussian botanist who collected the type specimen near Santa Fe in 1846. This specific variety belongs to the "Petrified Forest" population, a distinct regional form documented within the iconic triassic landscapes of Arizona. - Morphology: This cactus features a cylindrical epidermis that often takes on a purplish tint under high light. It grows in small clusters, characterized by 8 to 11 wavy costae (ribs). Its distinctive spination consists of a single, dark, upward-curving central spine surrounded by pale radial spines, creating a striking contrast. Large, funnelform flowers emerge from the areoles in late spring, boasting a silk-like texture.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a wild species native to the high-desert plateaus of the Southwestern United States. This specific locality originates from the Petrified Forest region of Arizona, where it grows in gravelly, nutrient-poor soils. Our specimens are nursery-grown from ethically sourced seeds to ensure the protection of wild populations and ecological sustainability.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: A strictly mineral-based mix is essential. Use 70% inorganic material (coarse sand, perlite, or crushed brick) and 30% organic matter. In the humid Indian climate, avoid clay-heavy garden soil.
- Light: Requires full sun to maintain compact growth and strong spination.
In peak Indian summers (April–June), provide 30% shade cloth to prevent scorching. - Water/Dormancy: Follow a "soak and dry" method during the monsoon and summer. Maintain a strict dry dormancy from November to February to mimic its native cold-desert environment; this "rest" is crucial for inducing blooms.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Unlike many cacti that are pollinated by bees, some Echinocereus species have evolved "chasmogamous" flowers that remain open day and night, specifically adapted to the unique timing of high-desert pollinators. Furthermore, August Fendler, the man for whom it is named, was so dedicated to his craft that he continued collecting plants in the American West even after losing his entire personal estate in a flood.
