Product Details
Smooth-Skinned Splendor: Echinocereus viereckii ssp. morricalii
A coveted collector’s gem, this spineless wonders offers a sleek, rubbery texture and neon-pink blooms rarely seen in the cactus world.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Echinocereus derives from the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and the Latin cereus (candle). This specific subspecies was named in honor of Dale Morrical, an American cactus enthusiast and explorer who helped bring this unique variety to botanical prominence in the mid-20th century.
The species name viereckii honors Hans Wilhelm Viereck, a prolific German plant collector active in Mexico during the 1920s. - Morphology: Unlike its prickly relatives, this cactus is nearly spineless.
It features a soft, vibrant green epidermis (outer skin) that feels rubbery to the touch. The stems are characterized by 6–7 prominent costae (ribs) that are often wavy or tuberculate. During spring, it produces massive, funnel-shaped flowers in a brilliant magenta hue that can grow up to 10 cm in diameter. - Habitat & Origin: This is a wild subspecies native to the steep limestone cliffs of Nuevo León, Mexico.
While common in specialized cultivation, it is a localized endemic in the wild. Our specimens are nursery-propagated from seed or offsets to ensure the protection of wild Mexican populations and support sustainable horticulture. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (60% grit/pumice, 40% organic matter). In the humid Indian climate, adding crushed brick or perlite is essential for aeration.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. In the Indian subcontinent, provide 40–50% shade during the intense afternoon heat of April to June to prevent epidermis scorch.
- Water/Dormancy: Water deeply when the substrate is bone-dry during the monsoon and summer. Observe a strict dry dormancy from November to February to mimic its native cool-dry season, which is crucial for triggering spring flowering.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: While most cacti evolved spines as a defense against herbivores and for UV shading, ssp. morricalii is a rare example of evolutionary reduction. In its specific limestone niche, it likely faced fewer grazing pressures, allowing it to lose its "hedgehog" spines and prioritize a photosynthetic, smooth skin—making it a literal "softie" in a harsh environment.
