The Diminutive Desert Gem: Echinocereus viridiflorus var. davisii
The world’s smallest hedgehog cactus, prized by collectors for its elusive chartreuse blooms and miniature stature.
- Origin & History of Name The genus name Echinocereus derives from the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and the Latin cereus (candle), referring to its spiny, columnar-to-globose form. The varietal name davisii honors Alva Ray Davis, who discovered the plant in 1940. It is often referred to as "Davis' Green Pitaya."
- Morphology This miniature succulent features a globose to cylindrical epidermis that rarely exceeds 3 cm in height. It possesses distinct costae (ribs) lined with small areoles that produce radial spines, often obscuring the plant body.
Its most striking feature is the lemon-scented, greenish-yellow flowers which are disproportionately large compared to its tiny frame. - Habitat & Origin This is a wild variety native to a very specific, limited range in Brewster County, Texas, USA.
It grows primarily in novaculite (silica-rich) rocky outcrops. To ensure sustainability and conservation of wild populations, our specimens are exclusively nursery-propagated from stable seed stock. - Cultivation Profile
- Substrate: Requires a strictly mineral-based mix (70% grit/pumice/perlite and 30% organic matter) to prevent root rot.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. In the Indian context, provide 40-50% shade during the harsh summer afternoons of the plains to prevent scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Water deeply only when the medium is bone-dry. During the monsoon, keep strictly dry to avoid fungal issues. Maintain a dry winter dormancy to trigger spring flowering.
5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote Despite its rugged appearance, Echinocereus viridiflorus var. davisii is a master of camouflage. In its natural habitat, the plant often retracts partially into the soil during droughts, becoming nearly invisible among the rocks and lichen, making it one of the most difficult cacti for botanists to locate when not in bloom.
