Ribbed Relic: Echinofossulocactus "tecomovaca" VZD 765
A rare collector's specimen defined by extreme architectural ribbing and documented field-collection lineage.
- Origin & History of Name The genus name derives from the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and the Latin fossula (ditch), describing its deeply furrowed surface.
"Tecomovaca" refers to the specific locality near Tecomavaca in Oaxaca, Mexico. The suffix VZD 765 is a specialized field collector number assigned by botanist Vít Zavadil, ensuring the plant’s traceable provenance to a specific wild population. - Morphology This cactus is famous for its lamellate costae—thin, wavy ribs that look like corrugated brain folds. These maximize the surface area of the epidermis for heat dissipation. It features a globose (rounded) body with sharp, upward-pointing spines emerging from felted areoles. Unlike many hybrids, this specific VZD strain maintains a compact, symmetrical form with a distinct grayish-green hue.
- Habitat & Origin This is a wild-type species, not a man-made cultivar. It originates from the arid limestone slopes of Oaxaca, Mexico. Our specimens are nursery-grown from documented seeds to ensure conservation and prevent the illegal poaching of wild Mexican flora.
- Cultivation Profile
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (60% grit/pumice, 40% coarse sand). Avoid peat; in the humid Indian climate, high organic matter leads to rapid root rot.
- Light: Requires bright, filtered sunlight. In the Indian subcontinent, provide 40-50% shade cloth protection during peak summer (April–June) to prevent epidermal scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Water deeply only when the substrate is bone-dry. During the monsoon, keep the plant completely dry in a ventilated area. Observe a strict winter dormancy (November–February) with zero water to trigger spring flowering.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote The genus Echinofossulocactus is the subject of a long-standing botanical "identity crisis." Many taxonomists argue it should be folded into the genus Stenocactus. However, specialized collectors insist on the original name because the "fossulo" (ditch) prefix so perfectly captures the unique, deep trenches between its ribs that no other cactus genus possesses.
