Echinopsis hybrid Annete Liske
Product Details
Star of the Patio: Echinopsis ‘Annette Liske’ A rare German hybrid prized for its colossal, show-stopping blooms that transform from bud to breathtaking spectacle in a single night.
- Origin & History of Name The specific epithet ‘Annette Liske’ honors a family member of the renowned German cactus breeder Reinhard Liske. Known for his meticulous work with Trichocereus and Echinopsis crosses, Liske assigned this hybrid the code RL.2005.0032.
It is a descendant of the famous ‘Wörlitz’ cultivar, a lineage celebrated for producing some of the largest flowers in the cactus world. - Morphology This hybrid is a "Trichocereus-type" Echinopsis, characterized by a robust, columnar green body with distinct ribs (costae) and relatively short, manageable spines emerging from fuzzy areoles. The true selling point is the flower: a massive, trumpet-shaped bloom often reaching 15+ cm in diameter. The petals are typically numerous and overlapping, creating a full, ruffled appearance rarely seen in wild species.
- Habitat & Origin ‘Annette Liske’ is a nursery-produced cultivar and does not exist in the wild. It was bred in Germany by crossing carefully selected parents to maximize flower size and color intensity. Because it is a hybrid, it is exceptionally hardy and adaptable compared to wild collected specimens, making it a sustainable choice for collectors.
- Cultivation Profile
- Substrate: Use a porous, mineral-heavy mix (70% pumice/perlite/grit, 30% garden soil or compost) to prevent root rot in Indian humidity.
- Light: Thrives in bright, filtered sunlight.
Protect from the harsh midday sun during Indian summers to avoid scorching the epidermis, but ensure at least 4-6 hours of morning sun for blooming. - Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry during the growing season (March–October). In winter (November–February), keep the plant cool and nearly dry to induce dormancy, which is critical for setting buds for the spring.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote The genus name Echinopsis comes from the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and opsis (appearance), referring to the plant’s spiny, sea-urchin-like shape.
Breeders like Reinhard Liske revolutionized this genus by crossing the smaller, round Echinopsis with the tall, night-blooming Trichocereus. The result, as seen in ‘Annette Liske’, is a plant that retains a manageable size but produces "flying saucer" blooms that are disproportionately huge—often larger than the plant body itself.
