Echinopsis hybrid Ben Hur
Product Details
Radiant Bloom Legend: Echinopsis hybrid 'Ben Hur'
A rare, cinematic masterpiece of vibrant salmon-pink blooms that command attention in any collection.
- Origin & History of Name: The name 'Ben Hur' draws inspiration from the 1880 novel and subsequent epic films, reflecting the "larger-than-life" and powerful nature of its blossoms. It is a modern hybrid, named to evoke a sense of ancient grandeur and strength, mirroring the robust, spiny stems from which the delicate flowers emerge.
- Morphology: This cactus features a globular to cylindrical epidermis (outer skin) divided by prominent costae (ribs) that house protective spines. Its most striking feature is the actinomorphic flower, characterized by ruffled, salmon-pink petals and a central cluster of protruding staminate filaments (golden stamens) that provide a high-contrast visual appeal.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a man-made cultivar and does not exist in the wild. It was bred through selective hybridization of South American Echinopsis species to prioritize flower size and color intensity. As a nursery-produced hybrid, it supports sustainability by reducing the demand for field-collected wild cacti.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (50% coarse sand/pumice, 25% perlite, 25% garden soil) to ensure rapid drainage during the Indian monsoon.
- Light: Requires bright, filtered sunlight. In the Indian subcontinent, provide 4–6 hours of morning sun, but use 50% shade cloth during peak summer afternoons to prevent epidermis scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Water deeply when the medium is bone-dry. Practice strict winter dormancy (November–February) by withholding water entirely to trigger spring budding; ensure the plant remains dry during humid monsoon spells.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Echinopsis are often called "Hedgehog Cacti" (from the Greek echinos, meaning hedgehog), but they are most famous for being "night-bloomers."
While many hybrids like 'Ben Hur' have been bred to stay open longer into the day, their ancestors evolved massive, fragrant flowers specifically to attract nocturnal pollinators like sphingid moths in the Andean foothills.
