Echinopsis Hybrid Copper tone
Product Details
Metallic Brilliance: Echinopsis hybrid 'Copper Tone'
A premium cultivar distinguished by its dual-toned sunburst blooms and high-reflectance metallic gradients.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Echinopsis is derived from the Greek echinos (hedgehog or sea urchin) and opsis (appearance), referencing the spiny, globose stems. The cultivar name 'Copper Tone' is a descriptive horticultural designation highlighting the specific carotenoid pigments that produce the transitional golden-to-orange gradient, mimicking the oxidation states of copper.
- Morphology: This hybrid features a cylindrical to globose epidermis with prominent, well-defined costae (ribs) that facilitate stem expansion during water uptake. Its most striking feature is the large, funnel-form flower; the tepals exhibit a color shift from golden-yellow at the base to warm orange at the margins. Centrally, a dense cluster of stamens provides a rich pollen source, framed by a multi-lobed stigma.
- Habitat & Origin: This plant is a man-made cultivar, resulting from selective cross-breeding of South American Echinopsis (formerly Lobivia or Trichocereus) species. It does not exist in the wild. Our specimens are propagated via sustainable offsets or laboratory tissue culture to prevent the depletion of wild cacti populations.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (60% inorganic material like pumice, perlite, or crushed brick; 40% organic matter) to ensure rapid drainage.
- Light: In the Indian context, provide bright, indirect sunlight or 40% shade cloth during peak summer (April–June) to prevent epidermal scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow a "soak and dry" cycle. During the monsoon, protect from stagnant humidity. Reduce watering significantly from November to February to induce winter dormancy, which is essential for spring bud initiation.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Echinopsis hybrids became a sensation in the mid-20th century, largely pioneered by breeders like Bob Schick. Interestingly, while the flowers are often massive—sometimes reaching 15cm in diameter—they are biologically designed for short, high-intensity reproductive windows, often lasting only 12 to 24 hours to maximize pollinator attraction while conserving the plant's moisture.
