Echinopsis hybrid cv 'Crepe Crusader' (SCHICK)
Product Details
Orchid Brilliance: Echinopsis hybrid cv. 'Crepe Crusader'
A world-renowned Schick hybrid prized for its massive, orchid-pink ruffled blooms and complex tricolor gradient.
- Origin & History of Name: The name 'Crepe Crusader' refers to the delicate, paper-like texture of the petals, which mimic crepe fabric. This cultivar is part of the "Schick Hybrids" collection, bred by Bob Schick at the Huntington Botanical Gardens. The name honors the ambitious breeding program (a "crusade") to produce the most vibrant and architecturally complex flowers within the Echinopsis genus.
- Morphology: This specimen exhibits a globose to short-cylindrical epidermis with well-defined costae (ribs) armed with short, radial spines. The plant is celebrated for its zygomorphic tendencies in floral structure, featuring ruffled, orchid-pink petals marked by a distinct orange-yellow mid-stripe. The central throat is pale, highlighting a delicate cluster of cream-colored stamens.
- Habitat & Origin: 'Crepe Crusader' is a highly specialized cultivar and does not exist in nature. It is the result of decades of controlled cross-breeding of South American Echinopsis and Lobivia species. Our stock is propagated via sustainable offsets to maintain the genetic integrity of the Schick lineage without impacting wild populations.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a highly inorganic, mineral-based mix (60% cinder, perlite, or grit and 40% leaf mold). This is critical in India to prevent "damping off" during the high-humidity monsoon months.
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light or 50% green shade-netting. In Northern India, protect the plant from the scorching "Loo" winds and direct May/June afternoon sun to avoid epidermal burns.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow a strict seasonal cycle. Water once the substrate is completely dry during the growing season (March–October). In winter, keep the plant entirely dry in a cool spot to trigger the formation of flower primordia.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Bob Schick, the creator of this hybrid, revolutionized Echinopsis breeding by documenting over 120 unique cultivars. His work proved that the "night-blooming" genetics of these cacti could be manipulated to produce "day-blooming" flowers with colors—like the orchid-pink of 'Crepe Crusader'—that are far more intense than those found in their wild ancestors.
