Crimson Crescendo: Echinopsis hybrid 'Dark Melody' (Schick 1391-5)

A masterwork of hybridizing, boasting dramatic, bi-color blooms that transform any collection into a floral gallery.

  1. Origin & History of Name: The genus name Echinopsis stems from the Greek echinos (hedgehog or sea urchin) and opsis (appearance), describing its spiny, globose form. 'Dark Melody' is a specific cultivar designated as 1391-5 in the renowned Schick Hybrid collection, bred and named by Robert Schick. The name reflects the rhythmic, harmonious layering of its deep red petals.
  2. Morphology: This cactus features a cylindrical, dark green epidermis with well-defined costae (ribs) lined with short, light-colored spines. Its defining characteristic is the large, funnel-form flower: deep red, layered petals with ruffled, pointed tips and contrasting pale pinkish-beige margins. A dense cluster of yellow-tipped stamens sits at the center, creating a striking focal point during its brief but intense nocturnal blooming cycle.
  3. Habitat & Origin: This is a man-made cultivar, not a wild species. It was developed in California, USA, by Bob Schick through an intensive multi-decade breeding program aimed at maximizing flower size and color complexity. Our nursery specimens are produced via vegetative propagation, ensuring genetic purity and sustainable production without disturbing wild habitats.
  4. Cultivation Profile:
    • Substrate: Use a highly porous, mineral-based mix (60% grit or cinder, 40% organic compost). In the Indian subcontinent, excellent drainage is critical to prevent rot during high-humidity cycles.
    • Light: Requires bright, filtered sunlight. While it needs light to trigger flowering, provide 30% green shade cloth during the extreme Indian summer heat (April–June) to prevent tissue burn.
    • Water/Dormancy: Follow a "soak and dry" routine during the growing season. In the monsoon, protect from direct rain. During winter dormancy (November–February), stop watering entirely to ensure the plant rests and sets buds for the spring.
  5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Bob Schick, the breeder of 'Dark Melody,' famously utilized the Huntington Botanical Gardens to develop over 120 unique hybrids. His work revolutionized the hobby because Echinopsis flowers—historically limited to whites and soft pinks—were transformed through his selection process into the vivid "Paramount" and "Schick" palettes seen today.
