Echinopsis hybrid Day Dream
Product Details
Sunset Spectrum: Echinopsis hybrid 'Day Dream'
An ethereal tri-color cultivar showcasing a rare gradient from sunset-orange to a luminous, dark-throated core.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Echinopsis is derived from the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and opsis (appearance), referencing the spiny, globose habit of the plant. The cultivar name 'Day Dream' was selected by hybridizers to evoke the surreal, soft-focus transition of its peach and orange hues, which mimic the colors of a shifting sky rather than the stark pigments usually found in wild species.
- Morphology: This hybrid features a dark-green epidermis with prominent, symmetrical costae (ribs) that allow for rapid volume expansion during the growing season. It is characterized by its polychromatic bloom; the outer petals are a saturated sunset-orange, transitioning through peach layers into a luminous yellow center. The flower possesses a distinct, dark-pigmented throat, creating a high-contrast visual depth.
- Habitat & Origin: 'Day Dream' is a complex cultivar resulting from selective cross-breeding within the Echinopsis genus, originally native to South America. It does not exist in the wild. This specimen is produced through sustainable nursery propagation, ensuring no impact on the endangered wild populations of the Andes.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a highly porous, mineral-based mix (60% cinder, pumice, or coarse sand and 40% organic compost) to ensure rapid drainage.
- Light: Requires bright indirect light or morning sun. In the Indian subcontinent, protect with 50% shade during the intense summer heat of May and June to prevent epidermal burning.
- Water/Dormancy: Water deeply when the substrate is dry during the growing season. Observe a strict dry dormancy from November to February; this cold/dry stress is essential for the formation of flower buds in the spring.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Echinopsis hybrids are often referred to as "Schick Hybrids" in the collector community, named after Bob Schick, who revolutionized the genus by crossing species to achieve stable, multi-colored blooms. While the original species were primarily white or yellow nocturnal bloomers, 'Day Dream' represents the modern peak of "diurnalization," where plants have been bred to stay open longer during daylight hours for maximum visibility.
