Echinopsis hybrid Desdemona (Schick)
Product Details
Dramatic Radiance: Echinopsis hybrid 'Desdemona'
A theatrical masterpiece featuring high-contrast rose-pink layering and a luminous, honey-toned floral core.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Echinopsis is derived from the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and opsis (appearance), characterizing its spiny, globose form. The cultivar name 'Desdemona' is a literary reference to the Shakespearean heroine of Othello; in the world of cactus hybridization, this name is chosen to reflect the "tragic beauty" and delicate, pure color palette of the flower, which stands in stark contrast to the rugged, thorny body of the plant.
- Morphology: This hybrid possesses a dark green, semi-glossy epidermis structured with 10–14 prominent vertical costae (ribs). The areoles are equipped with short, radial spines. Its primary attraction is the multiseriate (multi-layered) blossom; the petals are notably rounded and saturated with rose-pink pigments, transitioning into a delicate, creamy-yellow ring of filaments and anthers at the center.
- Habitat & Origin: 'Desdemona' is a domestic cultivar, purposefully bred through selective cross-pollination of South American Echinopsis species to stabilize its unique floral morphology. It does not occur in nature. This specimen is propagated sustainably via offsets, ensuring that no wild-collected genetics are exploited and providing a stable, nursery-hardened plant for collectors.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a highly-draining mineral mix consisting of 70% volcanic rock, crushed brick, or coarse sand and 30% organic peat. This is vital in India to prevent "damping off" during the high-humidity monsoon season.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect light or morning sun. In North Indian summers, protect from scorching 45°C+ temperatures with a 50% shade net to preserve the epidermis.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow the dry-winter protocol. Stop all watering from late November until the first signs of spring growth in February. This stress period is essential for the initiation of the rose-pink flower buds.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Echinopsis hybrids like 'Desdemona' are often called "Paramount Hybrids" or descendant types, a legacy started by pioneer breeder Harry Johnson in the 1930s. Johnson revolutionized the genus by proving that these "hedgehog cacti" could produce a spectrum of colors beyond the standard white or yellow, effectively turning a rugged desert plant into a vibrant floral powerhouse for home enthusiasts.
