Echinopsis hybrid Freyja
Product Details
Celestial Radiance: Echinopsis hybrid 'Freyja'
A high-utility hybrid distinguished by its geometric, multi-layered coral petals and a striking luminous core.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Echinopsis stems from the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and opsis (appearance). This cultivar is named after Freyja, the Old Norse goddess associated with beauty and gold, a reference to the plant’s regal coral-pink pigmentation and the "glowing" cream-colored center of its floral throat.
- Morphology: This hybrid possesses a globose to cylindrical dark-green epidermis with prominent, well-defined costae (ribs). The bloom is actinomorphic (radially symmetrical) and star-shaped, characterized by several concentric layers of lanceolate, pointed petals. These petals transition from a deep coral-pink to a pale, luminous cream at the base, surrounding a dense cluster of reproductive filaments.
- Habitat & Origin: 'Freyja' is a dedicated cultivar, bred through selective cross-pollination to enhance floral diameter and petal density. It does not occur in nature. Our stock is produced through sustainable vegetative propagation, protecting the genetic integrity of the hybrid while preventing the over-collection of ancestral species from South American highlands.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a coarse, mineral-based mix (e.g., 60% cinder or crushed brick, 40% organic compost) to ensure rapid drainage during the high-humidity Indian monsoon.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect light or 50% shade-net protection. Direct peak-summer sun in North India can cause "sun-scald" on the rib crests.
- Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly only when the medium is completely dry. In the Indian subcontinent, enforce a dry winter rest (November–February) to stress the plant into producing its spectacular star-shaped blooms in spring.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Many Echinopsis hybrids like 'Freyja' are the result of the "Schick Hybrid" legacy or similar breeding programs that began in the mid-20th century. These programs revolutionized cactus horticulture by proving that the typically white, nocturnal flowers of the genus could be genetically manipulated to produce a full spectrum of diurnal (day-blooming) colors, including the rare coral shades seen in this specimen.
