Echinopsis hybrid Gratitude
Product Details
Radiant Sunset: Echinopsis hybrid 'Gratitude'
An exquisite floral showpiece defined by its multi-tonal candy-pink petals and a rare, contrasting dark-centered throat.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Echinopsis originates from the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and opsis (appearance), denoting its spiny, rounded form. The cultivar name 'Gratitude' was assigned by hybridizers to reflect the plant’s prolific flowering nature, often viewed as a "reward" or "thank you" for minimal care. This specific hybrid is part of a modern lineage of Schick-type crosses bred for complex color gradients.
- Morphology: This specimen exhibits a dark-green, globose epidermis with prominent vertical costae (ribs) that facilitate expansion during hydration. It is characterized by its polychromatic bloom: the perianth segments (petals) transition from candy-pink at the tips to a warm orange at the base. The interior features a deep, dark throat—a result of concentrated anthocyanin pigments—offset by a brilliant yellow stigma and numerous pollen-heavy stamens.
- Habitat & Origin: 'Gratitude' is a complex cultivar and does not occur in nature. It is the result of decades of selective breeding involving various South American species. Our stock is produced through sustainable vegetative propagation, ensuring genetic stability and preventing the illegal collection of wild Echinopsis species from their native Andean habitats.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a highly mineralized, fast-draining mix (60% pumice or scoria, 40% organic compost). In the Indian subcontinent, adding crushed brick or charcoal helps manage humidity-induced fungal risks.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect light or morning sun. In Northern and Central India, provide 50% green shade netting during the scorching months of May and June to avoid photo-inhibition or bleaching.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow a strict "wet-dry" cycle. During the monsoon, ensure the plant is protected from stagnant rain. Observe winter dormancy (November–February) by keeping the plant completely dry in a cool spot to trigger the following season’s flower buds.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Echinopsis hybrids are often referred to as "the orchids of the cactus world" due to their spectacular blooms. Historically, significant breeding breakthroughs occurred in the mid-20th century, particularly by Harry Johnson and later Robert Schick. A unique biological trait of these hybrids is their nocturnal-diurnal transition; while many ancestors are strictly night-bloomers to attract moths, 'Gratitude' has been bred to remain open well into the day for human enjoyment.
