Echinopsis hybrid Gyda
Product Details
Sunset Spectrum: Echinopsis hybrid 'Gyda'
An exquisite tri-color hybrid featuring a rare, luminous gradient from molten gold to dusty rose.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Echinopsis is derived from the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and opsis (appearance), referencing the spiny, rounded stem. 'Gyda' is a cultivar name of Scandinavian origin, often associated with historical figures of nobility; in the horticultural trade, it identifies this specific genetic line characterized by its pointed, multi-tonal perianth segments.
- Morphology: This hybrid possesses a dark-green, globose epidermis with prominent, symmetrical costae (ribs). The floral structure is notably multiseriate, meaning it has several layers of petals. These petals are lanceolate (pointed) and exhibit a sophisticated color gradient: a yellow basal zone transitioning into a vibrant orange mid-section, concluding with dusty-pink apices (tips).
- Habitat & Origin: 'Gyda' is a specialized cultivar and does not occur in nature. It is the result of intensive selective breeding aimed at maximizing floral diameter and color complexity. Our stock is produced through sustainable laboratory-grade propagation and offset division, preventing any impact on the wild Echinopsis populations of South America.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Utilize a well-aerated mineral mix (composed of 60% volcanic rock or grit and 40% organic matter) to ensure rapid drainage during the high-humidity Indian monsoon.
- Light: Best suited for partial sun. In India, provide bright indirect light or use a 50% green shade net during the intense summer months to prevent epidermal burning.
- Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly only when the medium is 100% dry. To trigger the 'Gyda' bloom cycle, observe a dry winter rest from late November to February, which is crucial in the sub-tropical climate of the Indian subcontinent.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Echinopsis hybrids like 'Gyda' are often called "Paramount Hybrids" in legacy circles, following the pioneering work of breeder Robert Schick. A unique biological trait of this genus is that despite the massive energy expenditure required to produce such large, tri-color blooms, the flowers typically last only 12 to 24 hours, an evolutionary strategy designed to attract specific nocturnal and crepuscular pollinators in a very short window.
