Echinopsis Hybrid Harbard
Product Details
Crimson Sunburst: Echinopsis hybrid 'Harbard'
A high-contrast masterpiece featuring multi-layered scarlet petals and a striking, luminescent green throat.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Echinopsis stems from the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and opsis (appearance). The cultivar name 'Harbard' is part of a lineage of hybrids often named after mythological figures or specific breeding lines; in Norse mythology, Harbard is a name used by Odin, signifying strength and mystery—a fitting tribute to this hybrid's aggressive, bold red pigmentation and robust growth habit.
- Morphology: This hybrid possesses a classic globose to semi-columnar epidermis with deep, symmetrical costae (ribs). Its defining feature is the actinomorphic flower, characterized by layers of acuminate (pointed) petals that create a sunburst effect. The interior displays a rare luminous green throat, providing a sharp chromatic contrast against the ring of ivory-colored stamens.
- Habitat & Origin: 'Harbard' is a sophisticated cultivar developed through selective interbreeding of South American Echinopsis and Lobivia species. It is not found in nature. Our stock is produced through sustainable laboratory-grade micropropagation or vegetative offsets, ensuring genetic purity and reducing the demand for field-collected wild cacti.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Utilize a mineral-based mix comprising 60% volcanic rock or coarse river sand and 40% organic compost. This is critical for drainage during the heavy rains of the Indian monsoon.
- Light: Requires intense, filtered light. While it thrives in the Indian sun, provide a 25%–35% shade net during the extreme heat of May and June to prevent epidermal bleaching.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow a strict seasonal cycle. Water deeply during the growing season (March–October) only when the medium is dry. Withhold water entirely during the winter (November–February) to allow for the cold induction necessary for bud formation.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Many red-flowering Echinopsis hybrids owe their color to the genetics of the Lobivia genus (now merged with Echinopsis). Historically, these plants were bred in Europe and California during the mid-20th century to maximize flower size and color intensity, leading to the "Paramount" hybrids which paved the way for modern, high-performance cultivars like 'Harbard.'
