1. Origin & History of Name: The genus name Echinopsis stems from the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and opsis (appearance). The cultivar name 'Harbard' is part of a lineage of hybrids often named after mythological figures or specific breeding lines; in Norse mythology, Harbard is a name used by Odin, signifying strength and mystery—a fitting tribute to this hybrid's aggressive, bold red pigmentation and robust growth habit.
2. Morphology: This hybrid possesses a classic globose to semi-columnar epidermis with deep, symmetrical costae (ribs). Its defining feature is the actinomorphic flower, characterized by layers of acuminate (pointed) petals that create a sunburst effect. The interior displays a rare luminous green throat, providing a sharp chromatic contrast against the ring of ivory-colored stamens.
3. Habitat & Origin: 'Harbard' is a sophisticated cultivar developed through selective interbreeding of South American Echinopsis and Lobivia species. It is not found in nature.
