Echinopsis hybrid Lagertha
Product Details
Shield-Maiden’s Glow: Echinopsis hybrid 'Lagertha'
A high-contrast masterpiece featuring rare magenta-striped bi-color petals and a luminous, stamen-rich core.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus Echinopsis is derived from the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and opsis (appearance). This specific hybrid, 'Lagertha', is named after the legendary Viking shield-maiden, reflecting the plant's robust, "armored" spiny body contrasted against the fierce, striking beauty of its bloom. The name follows the modern hybridizing trend of using powerful mythological or historical figures to denote cultivars with exceptional floral presence.
- Morphology: 'Lagertha' exhibits a classic globose to cylindrical epidermis with prominent, symmetrical costae (ribs). The floral morphology is defined by its particolored petals: a pale yellow base intersected by vivid magenta-pink longitudinal stripes. These flowers feature an elongated floral tube and a radially symmetrical display of long, delicate stamens that emerge from a bright yellow throat.
- Habitat & Origin: This plant is a sophisticated cultivar, not found in nature. It is the result of selective cross-breeding of South American Echinopsis species to stabilize the bi-color striping. Our specimens are propagated via sustainable clonal methods (offsets), ensuring genetic purity and preventing the illegal collection of wild germplasm.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a highly permeable, mineral-based mix (e.g., 2 parts volcanic rock/pumice, 1 part coarse sand, 1 part organic compost) to ensure rapid drainage during the Indian monsoon.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect light or morning sun. In North or Central India, provide 50% shade protection during the intense summer heat to avoid bleaching the delicate floral pigments.
- Water/Dormancy: Water deeply only when the medium is 100% dry. Maintain a dry, cool dormancy from late November through February; this rest period is critical for the differentiation of flower buds in the Indian climate.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Echinopsis hybrids like 'Lagertha' are famous for their "brief but spectacular" biology. While the plant can live for decades, the bloom typically lasts only 12 to 24 hours. Historically, these plants were favorites in 19th-century European "window gardens" because they could withstand long periods of neglect and still produce some of the largest flowers in the entire Cactaceae family
