Echinopsis Hybrid Misty Mountain
Product Details
Ethereal Depth: Echinopsis hybrid 'Misty Mountain'
A show-stopping hybrid defined by its multi-layered magenta gradient and a striking, high-contrast dark floral throat.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Echinopsis is derived from the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and opsis (appearance), referencing the spiny, globular stems. The cultivar name 'Misty Mountain' is a poetic descriptor for the floral transition, where the soft magenta-pink outer petals give way to a dark, shrouded "misty" center, mimicking the atmospheric depth of high-altitude Andean peaks.
- Morphology: This specimen possesses a dark green epidermis with prominent, symmetrical costae (ribs) that facilitate expansion during irrigation. The bloom is characterized by its complex perianth structure, featuring multiple overlapping layers of magenta-pink petals. At the center, a deep, dark floral tube (throat) provides a stark contrast to the protruding, star-shaped ivory stigma, which is the female reproductive organ of the flower.
- Habitat & Origin: 'Misty Mountain' is a sophisticated cultivar resulting from intensive selective hybridization within the Echinopsis genus. It does not occur in nature. Our stock is produced through sustainable laboratory-standard vegetative propagation, ensuring that no wild-collected species from the South American highlands are harmed for commercial trade.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a highly-aerated mineral mix consisting of 70% volcanic rock, perlite, or grit and 30% organic matter. This is crucial in the Indian subcontinent to ensure rapid drainage during the high-humidity monsoon season.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect light or morning sun. In North and Central Indian summers, 50% shade netting is mandatory to protect the ribs from solar scorching and dehydration.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow a "monsoon-dry" protocol. Water generously during the growing season (March–October) only when the substrate is fully dry. Maintain zero-moisture dormancy from late November to February to stimulate the formation of flower buds for the spring flush.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Many Echinopsis hybrids, including those of this lineage, are descendants of the pioneering work of German botanist Curt Backeberg and later American hybridizers like Bob Schick. Historically, these plants were valued for their "nectar guides"—the dark centers or contrasting throats—which evolved in their wild ancestors to guide specific pollinators, such as moths or bees, toward the nectar source in low-light conditions.
