Echinopsis hybrid Odin
Product Details
Mythic Grandeur: Echinopsis hybrid 'Odin'
An elite specimen celebrated for its massive, multi-layered blooms and the commanding presence of its structural form.
- Origin & History of Name: The name is derived from Odin, the "Allfather" of Norse mythology, symbolizing power and wisdom. This choice reflects the hybrid's dominance in size and floral impact. Echinopsis combines the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and opsis (appearance), a reference to the spiny, globose body characteristic of the genus.
- Morphology: This hybrid features a robust, cylindrical epidermis with well-defined costae (ribs) that support a symmetrical arrangement of areoles. Its most striking feature is the large, funnel-form flower, often exhibiting a complex, multi-tonal petal structure that differentiates it from standard species.
- Habitat & Origin: Echinopsis 'Odin' is a man-made cultivar, bred through selective hybridization to enhance floral diameter and color stability. It does not exist in the wild. Our specimens are propagated via sustainable offsets or laboratory tissue culture to prevent the depletion of wild Echinopsis populations in South America.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (70% grit/pumice/perlite, 30% organic matter) to ensure rapid drainage during the Indian monsoon.
- Light: Requires bright, filtered sunlight; in the Indian subcontinent, provide 40-60% shade cloth protection during peak summer (April–June) to prevent epidermal scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Water deeply when the medium is completely bone-dry. Follow a strict dry dormancy from November to February to trigger spring budding.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Echinopsis hybrids were popularized in the mid-20th century, notably by breeders like Robert Schick. A fascinating biological trait of this genus is its "explosive" anthesis; flowers often open at night or early morning and last only 12–24 hours, concentrating all the plant's reproductive energy into one spectacular, short-lived event.
