Echinopsis Hybrid Orange Peel
Product Details
Sunset Radiance: Echinopsis Hybrid ‘Orange Peel’
A masterclass in hybridization, this rare cactus offers a breathtaking tri-color gradient rarely seen in the genus.
- Origin & History of Name: The name Echinopsis derives from the Greek echinos (hedgehog or sea urchin) and opsis (appearance), referring to the spiny, globose stems.
The cultivar name ‘Orange Peel’ was selected by breeders to reflect the zesty, saturated citrus tones of the primary petals, though the "Peel" moniker also playfully nods to the way the layered petals unfurl in a recursive, overlapping fashion. - Morphology: This hybrid features a cylindrical, deep-green epidermis structured by prominent costae (ribs) that host woolly areoles. Its defining feature is the multi-layered floral structure; the perianth segments are lanceolate and acuminate (pointed), exhibiting a complex color transition from a fiery orange hypanthium base to lavender-pink distal tips.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a man-made cultivar, not a wild species. It was developed through selective cross-breeding of South American Echinopsis species (formerly Lobivia or Trichocereus). These hybrids are bred for "flower power," focusing on floral diameter and color intensity. Our specimens are propagated via offsets to ensure genetic stability and sustainable trade without depleting wild populations.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (50% coarse river sand or crushed brick, 25% pumice/perlite, 25% organic compost). Avoid standard garden soil which retains too much moisture in tropical humidity.
- Light: High-intensity light is required. In India, provide direct morning sun for 5–6 hours, but use 50% shade cloth during scorching May/June afternoons to prevent epidermal scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Water deeply when the substrate is bone-dry. During the Indian monsoon, keep the plant strictly dry to prevent root rot. Reduce watering significantly from November to February to induce a winter rest, which is essential for spring budding.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: During the 19th-century "Cactus Mania" in Europe, Echinopsis were known as "Sea-Urchin Cacti." While the flowers are legendary for their beauty, they are biologically "expensive" for the plant; a single bloom can consume a significant portion of the cactus's stored water and sugar, which is why the spectacular display typically lasts only 12 to 24 hours.
