Echinopsis hybrid Syncopation
Product Details
Rhythmic Radiance: Echinopsis hybrid 'Syncopation'
A high-contrast masterpiece featuring dual-toned bubblegum petals and a striking, deep-magenta throat.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus Echinopsis is derived from the Greek echinos (hedgehog) and opsis (appearance). The cultivar name 'Syncopation'—a musical term for a shift in rhythm—was selected to reflect the plant’s unconventional "off-beat" color transition, where the bright pink of the outer petals meets a sudden, deep reddish-pink saturation at the floral base.
- Morphology: This hybrid displays a classic globose to short-cylindrical epidermis with prominent, symmetrical costae (ribs). The flowers are infundibuliform (funnel-shaped) and exceptionally large. Architecturally, the bloom is defined by its bi-colored perianth: bright bubblegum-pink outer petals that transition into a deep, reddish-pink throat, centered by a contrasting ring of ivory-colored stamens.
- Habitat & Origin: 'Syncopation' is a complex cultivar developed through selective horticultural hybridization. It is not found in nature. These specimens are produced via sustainable vegetative propagation (offsetting), which preserves the unique genetic flower color and prevents the illegal poaching of wild species from the South American Andes.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Utilize a well-draining mineral mix (e.g., 60% volcanic rock, perlite, or river sand and 40% organic compost). Proper aeration is vital to survive the high humidity of the Indian monsoon.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect light or 4–6 hours of morning sun. In North Indian summers, protect with 50% shade cloth to avoid scorching the stem.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow a "soak and dry" protocol during the growing season (March–October). Ensure a strict dry dormancy during the cool winter months to trigger the development of the characteristic large floral buds.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Many modern Echinopsis hybrids like 'Syncopation' trace their ancestry back to the pioneering work of breeders who crossed day-blooming Lobivia with night-blooming Echinopsis. This "syncopated" genetic heritage allows for flowers that remain open longer during daylight hours, providing a more enduring display than many of their wild, nocturnal ancestors.
