Echinopsis X pseudolobivia aurea R101 v sierragrande
Product Details
Golden Peak: Echinopsis aurea v. sierragrande (R101)
A high-altitude botanical treasure featuring luminous, multi-petaled yellow blooms and a compact, collector-grade form.
- Origin & History of Name: The name aurea is Latin for "golden," directly referencing the flower's vivid yellow hue. The designation v. sierragrande identifies this variety as originating from the Sierra Grande mountain range in Argentina. "R101" is the specific field collection number assigned by renowned cactus explorer Walter Rausch, signifying a documented wild-origin lineage that ensures genetic authenticity for serious collectors.
- Morphology: This taxon is characterized by a globose to short-cylindrical epidermis with a matte, bluish-grey tint. It features prominent, sharp-edged costae (ribs) adorned with woolly areoles and short, pectinate spines. The bloom is distinctively funnelform with numerous acute (pointed) petals that create a dense, layered appearance around a pollen-heavy central column of stamens.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a documented wild species variety native to the high-elevation rocky outcrops of the Sierra Grande in Córdoba, Argentina. It is not a man-made hybrid. We offer plants grown from cultivated seeds or offsets to ensure the protection of the fragile high-altitude ecosystems from where its ancestors were first documented.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Requires a highly porous, mineral-based mix (e.g., 70% volcanic rock, perlite, or river sand and 30% leaf mold) to ensure rapid drainage during the Indian monsoon.
- Light: Thrives in full sun to light shade. In the extreme heat of North India, provide morning sun with 35% afternoon shade to prevent heat stress and maintain the distinct epidermal color.
- Water/Dormancy: Implement a deep watering schedule during the growing season (March–October), allowing the medium to dry completely. Maintain a dry, cool dormancy during the Indian winter to promote the formation of flower buds.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Walter Rausch, the botanist behind the "R101" tag, specialized in the high-altitude flora of the Andes. The aurea group is unique within the genus because, unlike many Echinopsis species that bloom at night to attract moths, these golden varieties are diurnal (day-blooming), evolving their bright colors and high pollen count specifically to attract bees and other daytime pollinators.
