Euphorbia decaryi
Product Details
The Living Fossil: Euphorbia decaryi
A rare, crinkled architectural marvel from the coastal sands of Madagascar, perfect for the discerning collector.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus Euphorbia was named by King Juba II of Numidia in honor of his Greek physician, Euphorbus, who purportedly used the milky sap of these plants for medicinal purposes. The specific epithet decaryi honors Raymond Decary, a French botanist and administrator who conducted extensive biological surveys in Madagascar during the early 20th century.
- Morphology: This succulent is characterized by its prostrate, spreading growth habit and highly textured epidermis.
It features distinctive undulate (wavy-edged) leaves that are dark green to bronze-purplish. The stems are thickened and subterranean, forming a caudiciform base over time, with small, inconspicuous cyathia (the specialized flower structure of Euphorbias) that appear as pale, bell-shaped bracts. - Habitat & Origin: Euphorbia decaryi is a wild species endemic to the southern and southeastern coastal regions of Madagascar.
It is naturally found growing in dry, sandy soils or rocky crevices. Due to habitat loss in its native range, it is listed on CITES Appendix II; however, these specimens are nursery-grown from sustainable, cultivated stock to ensure conservation. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: A strictly mineral-based mix consisting of pumice, perlite, and coarse river sand with minimal organic matter to prevent root rot in humid Indian climates.
- Light: Bright, indirect sunlight. In the Indian subcontinent, protect from the harsh afternoon sun during peak summer (April–June) to avoid leaf scorch, though it requires high light to maintain its deep bronze coloration.
- Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly only when the medium is completely dry. Reduce watering significantly during the winter months when the plant enters dormancy. Avoid overhead misting during the monsoon to prevent fungal issues.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Interestingly, Euphorbia decaryi is a recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. While it looks like a rugged desert dweller, it is actually part of a lineage that adapted to the "spiny forests" of Madagascar, developing its unique wavy leaves to reduce water loss while maximizing the capture of morning dew in an arid environment.
