Exotic Hybrid Elegance: Euphorbia labatii × cremersii

A rare opportunity to own a stunning deciduous hybrid prized for its subterranean caudex and intricately patterned, velvety foliage.

  1. Origin & History of Name: The genus Euphorbia is named after Euphorbus, the Greek physician to King Juba II of Numidia. The specific epithets honor two key figures in Malagasy botany: Henri Labat, a French botanist, and Joseph Cremers, a dedicated researcher of Madagascar’s flora. This plant is a deliberate hybrid ("×") created to merge the architectural traits of both parents.
  2. Morphology: This plant features a thick, woody caudex (a water-storage organ) that often sits partially submerged in the soil. Its epidermis produces large, ovate leaves that are exceptionally soft to the touch due to fine hairs. The foliage often displays striking variegation or marbled patterns in shades of silver and emerald, while the cyathia (false flowers) are typically inconspicuous but structurally complex.
  3. Habitat & Origin: This is a nursery-produced hybrid cultivar. Both parent species (E. labatii and E. cremersii) are endemic to the rugged limestone plateaus of Madagascar. As a cultivated hybrid, this plant is produced through controlled hand-pollination, ensuring a sustainable supply that protects the endangered wild populations of the parent species.
  4. Cultivation Profile:
    • Substrate: Use a highly porous, mineral-based mix (volcanic rock, crushed brick, and coarse sand) with minimal organic compost to prevent caudex rot.
    • Light: Thrives in dappled sunlight or a bright windowsill. In the Indian subcontinent, avoid direct afternoon sun during peak summer, as it can scorch the delicate leaf surfaces.
    • Water/Dormancy: Water regularly during the hot growing season (March–October). This plant is deciduous; it will drop its leaves in winter. When this happens, keep the substrate completely dry until new growth appears in spring.
  5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Many Malagasy Euphorbias, including the parents of this hybrid, have evolved "geophytic" tendencies. In their native limestone habitats, they retreat into the cracks of rocks or underground during the harsh dry season to survive wildfires and extreme drought, leaving only the hardened top of the caudex visible to the world.
