Euphorbia multifolia
Product Details
Architectural Elegance: Euphorbia multifolia
A rare architectural marvel for collectors, prized for its intricate geometric symmetry and lush, many-leaved crown.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Euphorbia honors Euphorbus, the Greek physician to King Juba II of Numidia, who reportedly used the plant's milky sap for medicinal purposes. The specific epithet multifolia is derived from the Latin multi- (many) and -folia (leaves), directly referencing the plant's characteristic dense foliage which distinguishes it from many of its sparser succulent relatives.
- Morphology: This succulent features a cylindrical, often globose epidermis that acts as a water-storage organ. It is characterized by prominent costae (ribs) that provide structural integrity and allow the plant to expand during hydration. Unlike many desert cacti, it produces numerous small, lanceolate leaves from its apex, creating a soft textural contrast against its rugged, spiny body.
- Habitat & Origin: Euphorbia multifolia is a wild species native to the arid, rocky regions of the Eastern Cape province in South Africa. Our specimens are ethically sourced through controlled nursery propagation (ex-situ conservation), ensuring no wild populations are disturbed for the horticultural trade.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (60% coarse sand, pumice, or grit and 40% organic matter). In the humid Indian climate, high drainage is vital to prevent root rot.
- Light: Requires bright, filtered sunlight. In Northern India or the Deccan Plateau, provide afternoon shade during peak summer to prevent epidermal scorching.
- Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly when the substrate is completely dry during the growing season (March–October). Reduce watering significantly during the winter dormancy period to mimic its natural dry-spell habitat.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Members of the Euphorbia genus produce a milky white latex containing diterpene esters.
Historically, this "spurge" was so well-known for its purgative properties that it became a staple in medieval apothecaries, though modern collectors should handle it with gloves as the sap is a potent skin and eye irritant.
