The specific epithet phillipsioides refers to its resemblance to the Phillipsia group, while the "f. crest" (forma cristata) denotes the fasciated growth habit. The "hort." designation indicates its status as a horticultural selection, recognized for its aesthetic variation rather than a distinct wild lineage.
