Sculptural Symmetry: Euphorbia susannae
A geometric marvel of the succulent world, this clumping rarity brings architectural elegance to any refined collection.
- Origin & History of Name: The species was discovered by Dr. John Muir in 1925 in the Little Karoo region of South Africa. He named it in honor of his wife, Susanna Muir. The genus name Euphorbia honors Euphorbus, the Greek physician to King Juba II of Numidia, who famously used the plant's latex for medicinal purposes in the 1st century BCE.
- Morphology: Euphorbia susannae is a slow-growing, dioecious succulent characterized by its multi-headed, globose growth habit. The plant features a tuberculate epidermis, where the surface is covered in spirally arranged podaria (tubercles) rather than traditional costae (ribs). Each tubercle is tipped with a soft, non-pungent bristle, creating a pinecone-like appearance.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a wild species endemic to the Little Karoo, South Africa, specifically found in the Ladismith and Oudtshoorn districts. It grows in grit-heavy, arid landscapes. The specimens offered are nursery-propagated (ex-situ) to ensure the protection of wild populations and promote sustainable trade within the hobby.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix consisting of 70% grit (lava rock, pumice, or crushed brick) and 30% organic matter to prevent root rot in India's humid periods.
- Light: High-intensity indirect light or morning sun. In the Indian summer, provide 50% shade cloth protection to avoid scorching the epidermis.
- Water/Dormancy: Deep soak only when the substrate is completely dry. In India, the plant enters a semi-dormant state during the peak monsoon (due to high humidity) and winter; reduce watering significantly during these phases.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Unlike many of its cousins in the Euphorbiaceae family that grow tall and tree-like, E. susannae evolved a "geophytic" tendency in the wild, often retracting partially underground during droughts to protect its moisture reserves from the harsh African sun.
