1. Origin & History of Name: The species was discovered by Dr. John Muir in 1925 in the Little Karoo region of South Africa. He named it in honor of his wife, Susanna Muir. The genus name Euphorbia honors Euphorbus, the Greek physician to King Juba II of Numidia, who famously used the plant's latex for medicinal purposes in the 1st century BCE.
2. Morphology: Euphorbia susannae is a slow-growing, dioecious succulent characterized by its multi-headed, globose growth habit. The plant features a tuberculate epidermis, where the surface is covered in spirally arranged podaria (tubercles) rather than traditional costae (ribs). Each tubercle is tipped with a soft, non-pungent bristle, creating a pinecone-like appearance.
3. Habitat & Origin: This is a wild species endemic to the Little Karoo, South Africa, specifically found in the Ladismith and Oudtshoorn districts. It grows in grit-heavy, arid landscapes. The specimens offered are nursery-propagated (ex-situ) to ensure the protection of wild populations and promote sustainable trade within the hobby.
