An ethereal architectural hybrid, this rare 'Ghost' variety is a must-have centerpiece for the discerning succulent collector.

1. Origin & History of Name: The name is a portmanteau of its parent genera, Gasteria and Aloe. "Goliath" refers to its impressive scale and robust growth habit compared to other hybrids. "Ghost of Carlsbad" is a cultivar name likely referencing the famous Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, reflecting the plant's pale, subterranean-white variegation that mimics the ghostly stalactites of the region.
2. Morphology: This hybrid features thick, lanceolate leaves that form a majestic rosette. Its unique aesthetic comes from chlorophyll deficiency, resulting in a "ghostly" pale-green to cream epidermis. Unlike many succulents, it possesses subtle tubercules (small bumps) on the leaf surface, and its margins may show soft serration inherited from its Aloe lineage.
3. Habitat & Origin: This is a cultivar, a man-made hybrid created through selective breeding rather than a wild species. It was developed to combine the drought-hardiness of Aloe with the shade-tolerance and unique patterning of Gasteria. Our specimens are propagated via offsets to ensure genetic stability and environmental sustainability, avoiding the poaching of wild parent species.
4. Cultivation Profile:
   • Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix. A ratio of 70% inorganic material (pumice, perlite, or crushed brick) to 30% organic matter is ideal for the Indian climate.
   • Light: Requires bright, indirect light. In India, protect it from the harsh 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM sun, which can scorch the pale variegation. A north or east-facing balcony is perfect.
   • Water/Dormancy: Water deeply only when the substrate is bone-dry. During the monsoon, reduce watering significantly to prevent root rot. The plant enters a semi-dormancy during the peak heat of May and June.
5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The genus Gasteria was named by botanist Henri-Auguste Duval in 1806, derived from the Greek word gaster (stomach), because the base of the flower is swollen, resembling a human stomach. Gasteraloe hybrids are unique because they represent an intergeneric cross, which is relatively rare in the plant kingdom but possible here because both genera belong to the same tribe, Aloeae.
