Emerald Elegance Gasteraloe Green Ice 'All Green'

A rare, non-variegated selection prized for its architectural form and deep, jewel-toned saturation.

  1. Origin & History of Name: The name is a portmanteau of its parent genera, Gasteria and Aloe. The cultivar 'Green Ice' was originally bred by Kelly Griffin, named for its typically frosty, variegated appearance. The 'All Green' designation refers to a specific "reverted" sport that lacks the white striations of the original hybrid, focusing instead on the solid chlorophyll-rich pigment of the foliage.
  2. Morphology: This succulent features a compact rosette of thick, lanceolate leaves. Its epidermis is characterized by a smooth, matte texture and a deep forest-green hue. Unlike many hybrids, it lacks variegation, emphasizing the distinct tubercles (small, raised bumps) that give the leaf surface a subtle, tactile grip. The leaves are remarkably rigid, storing significant water in their parenchymal tissue.
  3. Habitat & Origin: This is a man-made cultivar, not a wild species. It is an intergeneric hybrid resulting from a cross between Gasteria and Aloe species, which are native to Southern Africa. This specific 'All Green' variant is propagated through sustainable vegetative offsets (pups) to ensure the genetic stability of its solid coloration.
  4. Cultivation Profile:
    • Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix consisting of 70% grit (pumice, perlite, or crushed brick) and 30% organic matter. In the Indian climate, avoid heavy peat to prevent root rot.
    • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. In India, provide 40-50% shade during the intense summer months (April–June) to prevent leaf scorching.
    • Water/Dormancy: Water deeply only when the substrate is completely dry. During the humid monsoon season, reduce watering frequency significantly. The plant enters a semi-dormancy during the peak of summer and winter; keep it nearly dry during these periods.
  5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The genus Gasteria is derived from the Greek word gaster, meaning "stomach," referring to the swollen, pouch-like shape of its flowers. While most collectors chase variegation, the 'All Green' revert is scientifically interesting because it represents a return to "wild-type" vigor, often growing faster and becoming more resilient than its variegated counterparts due to the higher concentration of functional chloroplasts.
