Gasteria Carinata var. Verrucosa
Product Details
Tactile Geometry: Gasteria carinata var. verrucosa
A living relic of the Cape Floristic Region, prized for its distinctive sandpaper texture and architectural distichous growth.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Gasteria is derived from the Greek gaster, meaning "stomach," describing the swollen base of its pendulous flowers.
The varietal name verrucosa is Latin for "warty," directly referencing the dense white tubercles covering the leaves. Historically, these plants were among the first South African succulents collected by the Dutch East India Company in the late 17th century for European conservatories. - Morphology: This variety is characterized by its distichous (two-ranked) leaf arrangement, though older specimens may spiral into a rosette.
The epidermis is dark green and entirely obscured by white, calcified tubercles, giving it a rough, "warty" texture. Unlike many succulents, it lacks costae (ribs), featuring instead thick, tongue-shaped leaves with a distinctive keel (carina) on the lower surface. - Habitat & Origin: This is a wild variety native to the Western Cape Province of South Africa.
It typically grows in the shade of scrub bush or tucked into rocky crevices, protected from direct midday sun. Our specimens are nursery-propagated via leaf cuttings or offsets, ensuring the preservation of wild populations and adhering to sustainable horticultural practices. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Requires a gritty, porous medium.
Use a mix of 60% coarse sand or grit and 40% leaf mold. Avoid heavy clay soils common in the Indo-Gangetic plains. - Light: Thrives in bright indirect light or dappled shade.
In the Indian subcontinent, keep away from direct afternoon sun, which can cause leaf scorching; an east-facing balcony is ideal. - Water/Dormancy: Follow a soak-and-dry method. During the humid Indian monsoon, reduce watering frequency significantly to prevent fungal pathogens. The plant undergoes a semi-dormancy in peak summer heat; water sparingly during these periods.
- Substrate: Requires a gritty, porous medium.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Gasteria species are remarkably slow-growing and long-lived, often surviving for decades.
In their native South Africa, they have a history of medicinal use; some tribes traditionally planted Gasteria on the roofs of huts, believing the plants possessed the power to deflect lightning due to their resilient and "armored" appearance.
