Gasteria cv. FUJI YUKI (Syn: Gasteria obtusa forma variegata)
Product Details
Luminous Variegation: Gasteria cv. Fuji Yuki
An exquisite collector's rarity, prized for its high-contrast white variegation and architectural symmetry.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Gasteria is derived from the Greek gaster, meaning "stomach," referring to the swollen, pouch-like shape of the flower base.
This specific cultivar, ‘Fuji Yuki’, translates from Japanese to "Snow on Mt. Fuji." The name honors its striking white-and-green aesthetic, evocative of the snow-capped peak of Japan's most iconic mountain. - Morphology: This cultivar features thick, tongue-shaped leaves that grow in a compact rosette.
Its epidermis is characterized by stable variegation, where longitudinal white stripes contrast sharply against a deep green base. Unlike many succulents, the leaf surface is relatively smooth rather than tuberculate (bumpy), a trait inherited from its G. obtusa lineage, which enhances the visibility of its distinct variegation patterns. - Habitat & Origin: Gasteria cv. ‘Fuji Yuki’ is a cultivar of Japanese origin, specifically bred through selective cultivation for its stable variegation.
It does not exist in the wild. All specimens are produced via vegetative propagation or tissue culture to ensure the preservation of its genetic patterns, making it a sustainable choice for enthusiasts as it does not involve the poaching of wild species. - Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (70% inorganic) consisting of pumice, perlite, or crushed brick mixed with a small amount of coco-peat to ensure rapid drainage.
- Light: Requires bright, indirect light. In the Indian subcontinent, avoid direct midday sun, which can scorch the white variegated tissue; a north or east-facing balcony is ideal.
- Water/Dormancy: Water deeply only when the substrate is completely dry. In India, these plants enter a semi-dormancy during the peak heat of summer and the coldest weeks of winter; reduce watering significantly during these periods to prevent root rot.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Gasteria are unique for their "distichous" growth habit in youth, meaning leaves grow in two vertical ranks facing each other. As ‘Fuji Yuki’ matures, it often transitions into a spiral rosette. Scientifically, Gasteria are closely related to Aloe and Haworthia and are known for their ability to easily hybridize, leading to the diverse range of cultivars available to collectors today.
