Gymnocalycium Vatteri Erect Spine
Product Details
Architectural Precision: Gymnocalycium vatteri 'Erect Spine'
A high-integrity specimen for the serious collector, defined by its singular, upward-reaching armature and minimalist geometry.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus name Gymnocalycium is derived from the Greek gymnos (naked) and kalyx (bud), referring to the flower buds that lack hair or spines.
This specific species honors Fred J. Vatter, an Austrian-Argentinian plant explorer who specialized in the flora of the Sierra de Córdoba. The "Erect Spine" designation refers to a selected form where the central spines grow vertically rather than appressed to the body, a trait highly sought after in modern succulent aesthetics. - Morphology: This solitary cactus features a globose, flattened epidermis in shades of olive to brownish-green. It is characterized by its prominent, rounded costae (ribs) divided into distinct tubercles. Unlike the typical three-spined variety, the 'Erect Spine' form is prized for its thick, needle-like central spine that emerges from each areole, pointing directly upward. It produces funnel-shaped flowers in shades of white or pale pink, exhibiting a characteristically smooth floral tube.
- Habitat & Origin: Gymnocalycium vatteri is a wild species endemic to the arid regions of Córdoba, Argentina. The "Erect Spine" variant is a stabilized selection bred for its intensified vertical spination. Our specimens are exclusively nursery-grown via sustainable propagation methods, ensuring no impact on wild populations.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a strictly mineral-based mix (60% pumice or grit, 40% organic matter). Avoid standard potting soils to prevent root asphyxiation.
- Light: Requires bright, filtered sunlight. In the intense Indian summer, provide 50% shade cloth protection to prevent epidermis scorching; winter requires full exposure for compact growth.
- Water/Dormancy: Follow a "soak and dry" cycle during the monsoon and summer. Enter strict dry dormancy from November to February, as high humidity combined with wet soil is fatal in the Indian winter climate.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: Gymnocalycium was one of the first South American genera to be widely categorized in the 19th century. Interestingly, G. vatteri is noted for its extreme morphological variability; in a single wild population, one might find plants with one, two, or three spines.
The "Erect Spine" form represents the peak of this evolutionary diversity, isolated and refined by specialist breeders to emphasize its most "architectural" traits.
