Haworthia attenuata
Product Details
Zebra Succulent: The Striking Haworthia attenuata An architectural masterpiece of white-pustuled foliage, perfect for the modern collector seeking a rare, structural accent.
- Origin & History of Name: The genus was named by botanist Henri Auguste Duval in 1809 in honor of Adrian Hardy Haworth, a prolific British carcinologist and botanist who specialized in succulent plants. The specific epithet attenuata is derived from the Latin attenuatus, meaning "tapering" or "thinning," referring to the long, slender shape of the leaves compared to its cousin, H. fasciata.
- Morphology: This succulent features a rosette of dark green, acuminate leaves. Its most distinctive feature is the epidermis, which is densely covered in white, pearly tubercles (raised bumps) on both the upper and lower leaf surfaces. Unlike H. fasciata, which only has these markings on the exterior, H. attenuata displays these "zebra stripes" throughout, creating a highly textured, calcified appearance.
- Habitat & Origin: This is a wild species indigenous to the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It is a hardy, non-endangered species, though we ensure all specimens are nursery-propagated via offsets or seed to maintain ecological sustainability and protect wild populations from poaching.
- Cultivation Profile:
- Substrate: Use a gritty, mineral-based mix (50% crushed expanded clay or pumice, 20% coarse river sand, and 30% organic compost). Avoid standard garden soil which retains too much moisture in Indian humidity.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light.
In the Indian subcontinent, protect from harsh afternoon sun (12:00 PM – 4:00 PM) to prevent leaf scorching; a north or east-facing balcony is ideal. - Water/Dormancy: Water thoroughly only when the substrate is bone-dry. During the summer dormancy (coinciding with the peak Indian monsoon humidity), reduce watering significantly to prevent root rot.
- Scientific/Historical Anecdote: While often mistaken for its relative H. fasciata, H. attenuata was actually once classified under the genus Aloe. It wasn't until the early 19th century that scientists realized these "miniature aloes" possessed distinct floral structures—specifically, their unique two-lipped (bilabiate) flowers—which warranted the creation of the entire Haworthia genus.
